Today in History: Abagana Ambush took place.

Abagana Ambush of March 31, 1968 was an ambush by Biafran guerrilla troops led by Major Jonathan Uchendu that wiped out the Nigerian 2 Division. During this ambush, the Nigerian Army suffered the heaviest defeat in the civil war. Of the 5,000 Nigerian troops ambushed, only a very small number survived, including the 2nd Division's commander, Col. Murtala Ramat Muhammed.

 Murtala was said to have assembled and deployed a convoy of 105 vehicles which included troop carriers, fuel tanker and four armoured cars to facilitate this plan on March 31, 1968. However, the Biafran secret intelligence gained knowledge of the plan and reported it to a higher Biafran command which instantly planned a deadly ambush.

 A 700-man troop, led by Major Uchendu, was given a huge task by Col. Achuzie to ambush the invading Nigerian troops at Abagana in the Enugu-Onitsha highway. The unsuspecting Nigerian 2nd division, numbering about 5000 soldiers, marched on until they were halted by a surprise attack from a smaller but well-prepared Biafran army. The Biafran army allowed the Nigerian army to march right into their midst before raining bullets on them.

 A locally made rocket called Ogbunigwe was crucially used during the Ambush. One of the Ogbunigwe rockets was launched directly at a fuel tanker in the Nigerian army convoy leading to chains of explosions which created a 450-metre great fire that incinerated men and metals within seconds. Refuelling vehicles exploded and burnt many infantry units. 

After the Ogbunigwe rocket attack, Biafran soldiers opened fire, killing what is left of the shocked 2nd division of the Nigerian Army. About 2,500 Nigerian army died in the attack; many others scampered in different directions. Col. Murtala Muhammed was relieved of duty afterwards and never commanded a division again during the war. Major Uchendu, the commander of the Biafran Army that led the Abagana Ambush with the advice of Col. Achuzie, recounted that the sight of the 2nd division convoy almost paralyzed his troops. His boys were so anxious to start firing, more out of panic than anything else. He asked them to remain calm until he gave the order. He allowed much of the Nigerian Army convoy to pass through. His boys were shocked why he would allowed them go through into the Biafran held zone. 

They were nervous & suspicious, yet they trusted his military gallantry and so awaited to know his strategy. The Abagana Ambush was the most resounding battle won by the Biafrans during the Nigerian-Biafran civil war. Abagana Ambush of March 31, 1968 is regarded as the most successful Ambush in Africa's history.

Train attackers give update on victims, ask families to get prepared for ransom

Attackers of an Abuja-Kaduna train carrying 362 passengers, are now calling their victim’s relatives to get prepared for ransom.

Bandits had attacked the Kaduna bound train, killed eight, injured 26, and kidnapped scores on Monday evening.

Some kidnapped victims’ families members, who spoke to DAILY POST on Thursday, said they received phone calls on Wednesday evening, telling them not to panic over the disappearance of their loved ones, assuring them of their safety, but that they should be ready for their calls for ransom.

Musa Abilewa, a family member of one of the kidnapped victims, said the terrorists spoke with him, saying his brother is fine.

According to him, the bandits said he should be ready for ransom.

“I spoke with one of the bandits who said my brother was fine. He said I should be ready to pay for feeding my brother since he was kidnapped,” he told DAILY POST sobering.

Another relative of a kidnapped victim, Mrs. Ngozi, who said he was discharged from the hospital in Kaduna on Thursday, said the only sister in the family was among those kidnapped.

According to him, “they called me while about to be discharged from hospital bed early morning on Wednesday. I spoke with my sister too, who said I should try all I could, to pay, if they demand for ransom.”

“Though I did not speak with my mother, my sister assured me she is fine,” he said.

Another family member, Yahaya Abdul also said the bandits called him and told him his brother was fine and that he should expect their call.

Court jails dog seller two years for cyber fraud

A 23-year-old dog seller, Omoteji Tomiwa, on Wednesday bagged two years jail term for impersonation.

He was convicted and sentenced by Justice Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court, Ilorin, having found him guilty of a two-count charge bordering on impersonation to obtain leveled against him by Ilorin Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Omoteji, from Egbe in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State, allegedly posed as one Michael Gregory vide a gmail account linked to his hangouts account with intent to obtain a sum of $2000 US dollars from one Sierra B. Price, an offence contrary to Section 22(2) (b) (11) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (iv) of the same Act”.

Count one of the charge sheet reads, “That you, Omoteji Tomiwa Stephen (Alias: Micheal Gregory) sometime in September, 2021 at Kwara State, within the judicial division of the Federal High Court, did fraudulently impersonate one Micheal Gregory vide your chats using Gmail; fsgfdrtr.56r5tgf@gmail.com linked to your Hangouts number 765-396-8539 with the intent to obtain and did obtain the sum of $2000 from one Sierra B. Price and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22(2) (b) (11) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention Etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (2) (iv) of the same Act.”

The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Counsel to the EFCC, Andrew Akoja, upon his plea, reviewed the facts of the case and tendered the fraudulent messages printed from the defendant’s device, one iPhone 12 Pro Max, HP laptop and one Toyota Corolla 2008 car, which were admitted in evidence by the law court.

Akoja prayed the court to hold that the prosecution had successfully linked the defendant to the charge and convict him accordingly as charged.

Justice Sani, in his judgement, sentenced Omoteji to one year imprisonment on each of the two counts, which would run concurrently with an option of fine of N200,000 on each count.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the convict’s iPhone 12 Pro Max, HP Laptop and a 2008 Toyota Corolla car to the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Justice Sani, further ordered the convict to restitute the sum of $100 US dollars which he benefited from the crime.

Facebook paid Republican firm to defame TikTok: Report

Facebook’s parent company, Meta, has been engaging the services of one of the most prominent Republican consulting firms to run a nationwide campaign defaming TikTok. 
The Washington Post on Wednesday reported exclusively that Facebook has been paying Targeted Victory to depict the China-based company ByteDance as a danger to American children and society, according to internal emails. 
“The campaign includes placing op-eds and letters to the editor in major regional news outlets, promoting dubious stories about alleged TikTok trends that actually originated on Facebook, and pushing to draw political reporters and local politicians into helping take down its biggest competitor,” The Washington Post said. 

Employees with the firm, Targeted Victory, worked to undermine TikTok through a nationwide media and lobbying campaign portraying the fast-growing app as dangerous.
In an email by a director, The Post said Targeted Victory had to “get the message out that while Meta is the current punching bag, TikTok is the real threat especially as a foreign owned app that is #1 in sharing data that young teens are using.” 
Targeted Victory is one of the biggest vendors for Republican campaigns. In 2020, the firm earned over $230 million, and its largest clients were from groups like the pro-Trump super PAC, America First Action. 

The social media app has gotten harsh criticism from Republican politicians. Lawmakers like Marco Rubio had pushed for the app to be investigated for censorship, and former President Donald Trump had signed an executive order to ban it.
The report comes after Facebook declared that it was losing users for the first time in its 18-year history. Meta’s recent earnings report said that Facebook’s active users dropped by almost 500,000 at the end of last year.

Justice for Chinelo: Woman killed during the Abuja-Kaduna terrorist attack

 Two nights ago, terrorists attacked a Kaduna-bound train, leaving people dead and many kidnapped. According to reports the train had left Abuja around 6pm, making its way through Katari and Rijana communities when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated along the railway, halting the train. Passengers who tried to escape through doors were shot at, leading to deaths, some instantly and others, over an extended period of time.

At 9.43pm , a Twitter user ( @nelo_x ) tweeted: “I’m in the train. I have been shot. Please pray for me.” Several vile comments were made on that post by government apologists, who discarded her update on the assumption she was chasing clout. Even as more information was revealed over time, with a number of other Twitter users saying they knew Chinelo, those comments still stunned with their cruel disregard for human life, all of them exposing the horrifying fact that Nigeria is deeply torn along moral, ethnic and political divisions, which will surely escalate in the months leading up to the general elections next year.

Chinelo’s death was confirmed by gruesome pictures of her on Twitter. She was one of us who, like Bamise , Pelumi , Jimoh, Oke and several other young Nigerians, have been avoidably killed by the insecurity allowed by the present administration. Rather than remember her at that moment, photos of her in her medical attire were widely circulated. Many who knew her confirmed she graduated sometime around 2015 from the University of Port Harcourt, an outstanding student of Medicine. She’d become a specialist in dental surgery, working at St Gerald’s hospital in Kaduna until her death. Chinelo once received an award for her “beauty and brains”, and according to a Steph was about to leave Nigeria. She wrote:

“Dr Chinelo was making an honest living, she was working at St Gerald’s hospital in Kaduna, she wanted more for herself and processed her papers to leave this hell-hole. She resigned last month to leave the country this Friday then this happened. Nigeria why???”

A close friend of Chinelo from their time as undergraduates gave a comment to the NATIVE. She had her secondary education in Queens College, Lagos and while at UNIPORT stayed resident at Pritaso Block B. “That’s where I got to know her,” he said, adding that “she was very serious with her academics [and] would read all night.
